Background Information
Holmes Middle School, located in Wheeling, Illinois, is right in the heart of a community that is constantly changing. According to the 2006 Illinois School Report Card, 62.8% of the students belong to families classified as “low-income.”
This is most noticeable every September, when the band program has its annual Beginning Band Registration Night. For the last two years, in response to an informal survey of the families that did not enroll in band, it was found that the principal reason was the cost of the instrument rental fee.
In its first two years, the Holmes Band Sponsorship Program has raised over $14,200 and received over 50 donated instruments. With the money, we have purchased 5 instruments including a Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Vibraphone, Tuba, and Bass Clarinet and have been able to provide scholarships for private lessons! These instruments have given students an opportunity to participate in an activity in which they would not have been able to before!
